Early Life

Mohammad Nabi was born to K.N Lokesh and Rajeshwari in the Logar Province of Afghanistan on the 1st day of January, 1985. Soon after he was born, the Soviet-Afghan war started marking its presence, leading to numerous Afghanistan residents fleeing away from their native state. Nabi’s family became one such victim of the war which resulted in their relocation to Peshawar, Pakistan.

Being brought up in Peshawar, Nabi was intrigued by the culture and started playing cricket there at the naive age of 10. Upon the termination of war, his family moved back to Afghanistan in early 2000s and was assisted by Mohammad Shahzad, Asghar Afghan and Shapoor Zadran in pursuing his dream of playing for the Afghan National Team.

In 2003, Nabi got the opportunity to play for an Afghanistan team against the Rahim Yar Khan Cricket Association.

Following this event, Nabi never looked back and touched heights with his remarkable performance in 2006, which impressed the former English Test captain Mike Gatting to an extent that he included him in the MCC’s Young Cricketers programme in England.

Selection in the Marylebone Cricket Club opened a plethora of career opportunities for Mohammad Nabi, one of which was granted in the year 2007. He made his debut by playing against Sri Lanka  and scoring the highest in his team, 43 runs in the first innings.

Afghanistan’s rise to ODI status from 2008-2009 is largely credited to Nabi’s unwavering contribution in all the seven matches that the team played for the tournament. Having taken 14 wickets and scoring 154 runs, Nabi was entitled as the ‘man of the tournament’.

Ahead of the 2010 Asian games, Nabi was decreed as Afghanistan’s captain. However, after losing the match to Bangladesh, he was removed from the position.

The 2 year period starting from 2013, witnessed Nabi’s celebrated role as a captain, leading the national side in the ICC Intercontinental Cup, the 2014 Asia Cup, the 2014 ICC World Twenty20, and the 2015 Cricket World Cup.

He had to resign from the post of captaincy in April 2015, following his ‘poor form’ in the previous matches.

In the 2016 ICC World Twenty20, Nabi was announced as ‘man of the match’ for both the matches Afghanistan played against Hong Kong and Zimbabwe. On 14th June, 2018 Nabi played his debut Test match against India. In the 3rd series of T20I against Ireland, Nabi scored 81 runs overwhelmingly to win the man of the match in 2019.

In order to draw his complete, undivided attention to white-ball cricket, Mohammad Nabi announced his retirement from Test cricket in 2019.
